Frequently Asked Questions
Q1) Can my travel insurance cover ambulance fees for medical evacuation and repatriation?
Yes, most travel insurance plans cover medical evacuation and repatriation, which includes the use of ground ambulances to transport the patient back to their home country for treatment.
However, different insurance providers offer varying types of coverage, so it is recommended to check with your insurance provider for specific details.
Q2) The patient is in ICU on a ventilator. Can we arrange for an ambulance to transport the patient back?
Patients who are critically ill are strongly recommended to have their condition stabilized prior to evacuation. However, in instances where a hospital lacks adequate facilities or specialized staff, evacuation may be necessary to ensure the patient receives appropriate treatment.
Our medical team is trained in intensive care, and we are equipped with portable life support ventilators and necessary medications on both air and land ambulances to facilitate the safe transport of patients.
Q3) What are the documents required to be submitted for medical evacuation and repatriation?
Medical Specialist Team Arrangement Requirements
To facilitate the arrangement of a medical specialist team, we will require the following documents:
- A copy of the patient’s passport
- A copy of the passport of the person accompanying the patient (for both land and air transport)
- The insurance policy plan (if applicable)
- A brief memo from the attending doctor outlining the patient’s condition
- The patient’s current location or hospital details
If the patient is seeking treatment in Singapore, the Ministry of Health (Singapore) requires the following:
- An email or written confirmation from the receiving hospital in Singapore indicating their acceptance of the patient
Q4) What is the luggage allowance for air or land ambulance?
At Medivac, we recommend that the Next of Kin carry only one piece of hand luggage. This is to ensure that, in the event of an emergency, the medical team can prioritize the swift transfer of the patient to the hospital, without any delays caused by unloading luggage from the conveyance belt.
For land ambulances, space is typically limited and is reserved for medical equipment and devices essential for patient care.
Therefore, it is advisable to limit the luggage to one piece of hand luggage, with any additional baggage being entrusted to other family members for safekeeping.
Q5) What is the timeline of a Medical Evacuation and Repatriation?
Once all required documentation has been submitted, the Emergency Physician will carefully assess the provided information and initiate the necessary preparations for the evacuation process.
In the case of land ambulance evacuations, we can efficiently facilitate the patient transfer on the same day, ensuring timely care.
For air evacuations, arrangements can be made to execute the transfer within a 24-hour window for private jets, while transfers via commercial airlines may extend up to 14 days, depending on availability and scheduling.
Q6) Does your Medical Evacuation and Repatriation service only bring patients back to Singapore?
Medivac medical evacuation and repatriation services are not limited to Singapore.
We can transport patients from other countries, facilitating their journey home or to the next medical destination. Throughout your flight, you will be closely monitored by experienced medical escorts who will work around the clock to ensure your condition remains stable and to prevent any deterioration.
